When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon was one of my favorite reads of this year. This cute contemporary had me in love from the start and I encourage everyone to pick it up!

Dimple is a girl who has her eyes set on her future: being independent, going to Stanford, having an amazing career. The one thing not in her future plans is finding the IIH— the Ideal Indian Husband. Her mother pressures her to use the opportunity of a summer program to search for the IIH, but Dimple is not about that. But being at the summer program will at least be a chance at freedom from those pressures.

Rishi is a traditional guy. He has huge amounts of respect for his parents, and he loves the idea of an arranged marriage.

Side note: lots of arranged marriages today are not forced. Simply, the parents find someone they think would be a good match for you. Lots of the time, the kids have a say in this. This story shows the positive side, as it is a huge cultural aspect.

Rishi is very excited to attend this summer program to meet Dimple Shah, who he hopes will be a good match for him. However, this shows to be a complicated idea when he makes a joke:

“‘Hello, future wife,’ he said, his voice bubbling with glee. “I can’t wait to get started on the rest of our lives!’”

And proceeds to get a coffee thrown in his face by the very confused Dimple, who has no idea who Rishi is. But, like all good romances, it starts from there with the most awkward moment possible.

Firstly, this book is so hilarious! I was dying with laughter so many times, and both characters each have their own sense of humor. Dimple is so determined and focused. She wants to prove wrong all those who doubt her and break through all who stand between her and her goals. She is a strong feminist and a great character. She is a great example of a person working hard and finding their own way. Rishi is the softer side of the relationship. He is sweet and caring and someone who always thinks things through. He and Dimple balanced each other out in a great way.

“But that was Rishi... he was like a pop song you thought you couldn't stand, but found yourself humming in the shower anyway.”

Speaking of the relationship, it was adorable! Not only was it well-developed, but it was dorky and sweet. Sure, the characters had their bumps in the road, but they worked through it, not for the convenience of the plot, but because of how good their chemistry was and how they were both willing to work out their problems for each other. There were lots of times I wanted to punch the characters in the face, only because they were both selfless. They didn’t want to hurt the other person.

Basically, this summer romance was the best thing ever and definitely my new feel-good book. The lovable characters and awesome romance makes for the perfect poolside or beach read. Not only is it fun, but it’s diverse and gives so much information about a culture I did not know much about. I learned so much about the Hindu culture by reading this book, and it really gave me a new perspective.

Do you like cutesy romances? Amazing characters? Hilarious dialogue? Let me tell you the story of When Dimple Met Rishi…

Lots of love,
